A Message from Jeff Barnes, Director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency

Michigan is proud to be an All* Veteran State in partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. With more than 680,000 veterans today and 30-50,000 more anticipated in the coming years, the state is working aggressively to assist veterans and their families make the transition and begin the next chapter of their lives here.

For veterans, Michigan has made it easier to transition military training and experience into the classroom and workplace by passing legislation supporting credit for prior experience. The state is home to some of the best universities, community colleges and trade schools in the nation, with most offering in-state tuition for active-duty and transitioning veterans, regardless of previous home of record.

For employers, Michigan’s growing density of veteran talent and favorable business climate makes the state a great place to locate and expand operations. In fact, Michigan has added nearly 221,000 private-sector jobs since December 2010, and the state leads all others in the growth of manufacturing jobs. Furthermore, the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is partnering with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Workforce Development to assist employers to develop veteran hiring strategies that connect your human resources to veteran talent with skillsets that best match your organization’s needs.

The Great Lakes State also offers a tremendous quality of life. Outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, kayaking, hunting and fishing are just a few of the ways to enjoy our many natural wonders, such as the Pictured Rocks and Sleeping Bear Dunes national lakeshores, any one of the Great Lakes or the 11,000 inland lakes located throughout the state. Michigan also offers great festivals like the Race to Mackinac, the National Cherry Festival and the Tulip Time Festival.
